Is your flight cancelled due to coronavirus?

Your rights as an air passenger

Thousands of air passengers have had their travel plans cancelled due to the coronavirus, as many airlines are forced to cancel their flights to high-risk areas. Have you been affected, and are you aware of your rights as an air passenger? Read on, as we explain how will help you get your expenses reimbursed.

If the airline cancels your flight

Normally, only offer help with claiming reimbursement for additional expenses according to EU regulation 261/2004 when these are related to a claim for compensation for delayed arrivals. However, we have now expanded our services to assist the many passengers whose flights have been cancelled due to the coronavirus. This means that we now offer assistance to passengers who are entitled to reimbursement for flight tickets or other expenses.

Achieving reimbursement can be difficult for air passengers, as there may be uncertainty about whether it is the airline or the travel agency who is responsible for reimbursing your expenses, or if they wrongfully reject your claim. That’s no problem, we’ll take care of everything, and we will not hesitate to take your claim to court, if necessary. We do this without charging you extra.

If you are still at home when your flight is cancelled

If the airline cancels your flight less than 14 days prior to your departure, you are entitled to a rebooking to another flight OR a full refund of your flight ticket. Because of the current situation, in many cases, it will not be possible to book you onto another flight, which means that you are entitled to get your money back. The coronavirus is considered an extraordinary circumstance and, therefore, you will not be entitled to any further compensation.

If your flight is cancelled less than 14 days prior to your departure, and your airline does not offer you a rebooking, despite the fact that there are alternative flights, you may be entitled to additional compensation.

Your airline is not responsible for any lost expenses related to hotel reservations or car rentals. We recommend that you contact your insurance company for concerns regarding this.

If you are abroad when your flight is cancelled

If you are stranded abroad because your return flight has been cancelled, the airline is obligated to get you back home as fast as possible. If the airline cannot offer you a rebooking because all other flights have been cancelled, you are entitled to find and book an alternative. In this case, the airline must reimburse your flight ticket and pay the price difference between your original ticket and the price of your other transportation back home. If you incur any extra expenses while you wait to get home, e.g. overnight stays, food and drinks or transportation to a hotel, you can also claim reimbursement for these. Remember to hold on to your receipts!

If you cancel your flight ahead of your departure

If you cancel your flight because you want to prevent the spreading of the coronavirus, you cannot claim a refund of your ticket, and the airline is not responsible for your lost expenses (e.g. hotel reservations or car rentals). This also applies, if the Travel Advisory advise against travels to your destination. Therefore, will not be able to help you in such case.
