Strikes are a common cause of flight delays and cancellations. But when are you entitled to compensation? Read more about your air passenger rights in case of flight strikes here.

Can I get compensation if my flight was delayed or cancelled due to strike?

In 2018, the European Court of Justice ruled that air passengers have the right to compensation in cases of flight delay or flight cancellation if the flight disruption is caused by strikes among cabin crew or other airline staff. Prior to this, all strikes were considered an extraordinary circumstance, also referred to as force majeure. In cases of extraordinary circumstances, the airline is not responsible for any delays or cancellations and passengers are therefore not entitled to compensation. The new EU ruling does away with this principle and allows air passengers to claim compensation in certain cases of strike. According to EU ruling C-195/17, the airline may thus be required to pay compensation to passengers if the airline's own flight crew strikes.

How much compensation am I entitled to?

You are entitled to compensation from the airline of up to €600 if you are more than three hours delayed upon arrival at your final destination due to strike among airline staff. The compensation amount depends on the distance of your flight and the duration of your delay. You can read more about compensation rates in our section on compensation.

Claim your compensation

You are entitled to compensation if your flight was cancelled due to airline strike, and you were not notified of this at least 14 days prior to your scheduled departure. If your flight was cancelled, the airline must offer a rebooking on an alternative flight within reasonable time.

If they cannot offer you a replacement flight, you are entitled to a refund of your original tickets, so you can purchase new tickets. If your new tickets are more expensive than your original tickets, the airline must compensate for the price difference. Remember to save all documentation proving that the airline has not offered you a rebooking within reasonable time and save your receipts for your purchase of new tickets.

You are entitled to food and drinks

If your flight cancellation or delay results in additional expenses for acommodation, food, drinks or alternative transportation, the airline is obligated to refund these. Keep in mind that your additional costs must be within reasonable limits (five-star hotels, alcohol, cigarettes and expensive meals are generally not covered). Remember to save all of your receipts! We are happy to help you get compensation for your additional expenses. All you need to do is attach your receipts when you upload your travel documents.
